The Great Debaters

by PFDebate LLC on May 7, 2007

The Great Debaters has been in pre-production for a long-time. Production is scheduled to begin May and the film is starting to get some press.

The film is being produced by Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions. Denzel Washington is the director and will portray the debate coach, Melvin B. Tolson. Forest Whitaker is in negotiations to join the cast. Here is the plot outline from Hollywood.com:

True story of professor Melvin B. Tolson who formed a debate team at a small, African American college in the 1930s. The team went on to beat Harvard in the national debate championships.

The Polly Staffle website has a more in-depth summary and review.
