in Debate News

Bill Batterman has written an interesting piece for The 3NR about reading author qualifications. It is aimed at the policy debate community, but piece will be on interest to the Public Forum Debate community.

This doesn’t really apply to PFD. Policy teams say, “Khalizad ’95…” and begin. PFD teams say, “According to Zalmay Khalizad, the former U.S. ambassador to the U.N., in 1995…” If teams don’t offer author qualifications, I immediately become suspicious of their evidence.

As debaters push the norms of Public Forum Debate, there will be a temptation to drop source qualifications, especially because of the short speech times. I’m certain that citation standards already vary considerably around the nation. Heck, evidence citation quality varies considerably between handbooks.

author qualifications are the biggest waste of time….and completely unnecessary….evidence should have nothing to do with the decision…otherwise morons could debate just by having evidence and researching…it allows talentless ppl to do well which is unacceptable.

R-Man,

Are you being serious?

Christian Chessman June 5, 2009 at 4:07 pm

I think rman trolls pretending to be the worst of cx debate. No, I don’t think he’s serious. Any legit cx debater knows that author quals are an integral part of debate in some cases.

We don’t read author quals, if they want them they can get them in crossfire.

Qualifications are nessesary. Not only that but the NFL mandates that we have author qualification in our evidence cause if they didnt then I could quote my best friend and it be considered ligit. However, I do agree that when people only argue the year on evidence then I get aggrevated.

“In all rounds, debaters should, at a minimum, orally deliver title of the source and the author’s name.” – National Football League … So why is it necessary to orally deliver the authors quals….?

Quinn June 6, 2009 at 12:17 pm

p.s. Did anybody watch nationals but me? Nobody read any “Title of the Source” =P So much for NFL rules.

We ought to be able to just say the name and date like TD….Speeches are too short and if someone wants the full citation they can ask for in in Crossfire for clarification purposes
