January 2008 Topic Skew

by PFDebate LLC on January 8, 2008

My prediction before last weekend was that the January 2008 topic would have a 70/30 skew in favor of PRO teams. I think the best way to measure topic bias is by looking at elimination round results since the teams should, theoretically, be more evenly matched.

At the Laird Lewis Invitational this past weekend the PRO won 5 elimination round debates and the CON won 2. At the PFDebate.com National Public Forum Challenge, the PRO won 8 elimination round debates and the CON won 7. This means that the PRO team won 69.2% of the elimination round debates. More interestingly, the PRO won all of the semifinal and final round debates.

The sample size is obviously too small, to make a generalization, but it is certainly food for thought. I would love for people to submit complete elimination round results in January which include PRO and CON designations.

I don’t know the breakdown for elims, but in prelims this weekend at ASU only ~27% of the con teams won
