Iowa Crowns State Champions

The Iowa state debate championships were held this weekend.

In the small school division, the Okoboji/Spirit Lake teams of Alyssa Geinitz & Katelyn Warburton and Leah Hilsabeck & Melissa Osman closed out the final round. Hilsabeck & Osman were also one of two Okoboji/Spirit Lake teams that closed out the small division state championship last year. They were the top seed both years.

In the large school division,  Matt Reisner & Jessie Ede of Indianola defeated Natalie Radia & Josh Johnson of West Des Moines Valley on a 2-1 decision to win the state championship.

Who are the kids from Indianola? I’ve heard of Valley, but where did those other people come from?

Indianola is a rising force in the Iowa debate scene.

Spencer Waugh is a great coach, and these Indianola kids are incredibly talented. They have four solid teams. Look for a couple at NFL nationals in out rounds. I’m glad they’re in the other district.

I heard the Indianola kids went completely undefeated too…

FYI, Indianola broke 2 teams to nationals in Public forum. The Reisener/Ede team that won state got first, and a team of senior girls that wasn’t together at State finished in 2nd.

I do agree that Greg Stevens is a god among men. But the Top Indianola team is all hype.

Well I think you’re probably just jealous Jimmy… I’ve debated these kids, and they’re good. Really good. Maybe someone is bitter they didn’t win State?
