National Speakers’ Forum Public Forum Debate Camp

by PFDebate LLC on May 9, 2007

Although this is the inaugural year for the National Speaker’s Forum, the camp is being run by debate camp guru Jenny Cook and her Summit Debate Enterprises and looks to be one of the (if not the) best camp for serious students looking to improve in Extemp, Oratory, LD, Public Forum Debate, and Congress!

Why Will NSF Be Such A Great Experience?

  • NSF is going to held in ORLANDO on the beautiful campus of the University of Central Florida!
  • NSF is going to have access to one of the best college libraries east of the Mississippi!
  • NSF is going to have a “day at Disney World!”
  • NSF is very reasonably priced AND offers a one-week option.

What Makes NSF The Best Is The Staff

The Public Forum Debate Summer Camp @ NSF will be run by Jason Kline of Myers Park High School in Charlotte, North Carolina. Jason has been involved in forensics for 15 years as a competitor in high school, college, and now a coach. Since its inception, Jason has had tremendous success in Public Forum Debate. He has coached five different Public Forum teams to elimination rounds at Glenbrooks, Lexington, Emory, Blue Key, Wake Forest, and countless local tournaments. In 2005, he coached the NFL 8th place team of Ian Sharma and Teresa Reed. In 2006, he coached the NFL 5th place team of Arun Das and Jonathan Jerome. He is currently on the NFL Public Forum Debate Resolution Wording Committee and is a strong believer in the value that Public Forum holds in shaping the thinking and speaking skills of competitors.

Assisting Jason will be Greg Stevens of Okoboji Community School in Milford, Iowa. Greg is a three-diamond coach and has tremendous success in all debate events, including Public Forum. He has coached Public Forum teams to elimination rounds at NFL Nationals three years in a row, with his team finishing 8th last year and three of his teams closing-out the Iowa State Tournament this year! Greg also brings his experience as a state legislator to NSF! His skills in pubic delivery and argumentation will prove highly useful to students wanting to expand their ability to debate on the local and national circuit.

Joining Greg and Jason are the two best Public Forum Debaters in the country: Rachel Urban and Patrick Toomey!

Rachel Urban of Southern Lehigh High School in Pennsylvania will be teaching this summer at NSF! Rachel is a fixture of out-rounds on the national circuit, including her 1st place at Emory and 2nd at the Crestian! Additionally, Rachel was Pennsylvania State Champion in 2006. Rachel’s strength is her extremely poised speaking style and highly effective rebuttal technique! Students at NSF will gain a tremendous edge from Rachel!

In addition, the NSF Public Forum Camp is proud to have on its staff Patrick Toomey of Durham Academy in North Carolina. Patrick is the highest ranked debater in Public Forum this year and deservedly so! He and his partner Katherine Buse won both the University of Florida Blue Key and the Harvard Invitational! Patrick has made it to late rounds of every tournament he has attended this year. At NSF, Patrick will be sharing his research techniques and evidence use skills!

National Speaker’s Forum is looking to help Public Forum Debate students take their skills to the next level. Beginners and experienced competitors will have a program tailored to their needs, including:

  • Fully critiqued practice rounds, with in-round aid early in the camp.
  • Labs focussed on improving evidence usage, rebuttal, and Crossfire skills.
  • Personal assessment of speaking/delivery issues.
  • Skill and drill sessions.
  • Topic analysis on key issues.
  • Research guidance labs.
  • Language labs.
