Brian Bittner from Towson University sent us some first hand information about the movie Rocket Science.
I haven’t seen any actual footage, but I was involved with the production of Rocket Science. It was filmed in Baltimore during our high school camp two summers ago. Several of the stars and an assistant director came to campus to watch debates during our tournament. They also watched an NDT final from the early 90’s.
The director debated in high school and was excited about depicting debate “as we know it.” I met with him and the cast at their office — he talked about “spreading” and asked me to depict it for the cast, as best as I could. I told them about stock issues, flowing, reading evidence, and how to look like you are actually debating. They borrowed some of our tubs, expando files, and evidence for use as props.
I was an extra in one scene — in the front row of the audience during an awards ceremony. Unfortunately, that was the only filming I saw. I don’t know what the debate scenes in the movie will look like, but the directors and cast were familiarized with policy debate and knew a bit about it.
This sounds promising. It has to be better than Listen To Me.
